Empowering Youth Through Horsemanship
Message from our President
August 20, 2020
It is a challenging time for all of us, and especially for the children in our community who rely on our program to give them hope. Our mission becomes more important than ever as children are unable to participate in their normal interactions with others while isolated at home. During my career spanning 40 years in law enforcement, I often saw the results of having too few resources for troubled children. Public agencies, perennially under-funded, can only deal with the most egregious cases, and then only after the trouble has occurred. As a specialized, privately funded social program,
Between Horses and Humans provides a critical service for some of our community’s most vulnerable or disadvantaged kids, offering a stability they may not have in their daily lives, and helping them to cope with challenging life issues. Our instrument is the horse, but our dedicated BHH volunteers are the catalyst that brings the children and horses together. Now that COVID-19 has caused kids to be stuck at home - which may be a dangerous or lonely place for them - our work is more critical than ever. Between our horses and their humans exists a bond that is proven to overcome the isolation felt by these children, and to guide them toward happier and more productive futures.
I am proud to take over the role of president of this fine organization, allowing our founder, Barbara Slade, to focus on coordinating and running the program. It is my hope that my assistance will help Barbara and our volunteers make the magic happen for the future of our community – the children. As ever, we are deeply indebted to Ruth Page and Greg Walsh, without whom our program would not be possible. I also want to thank all our generous donors for their past support. We ask that you redouble your commitment now, so that our work can continue to change lives, and we all look forward toa brighter future ahead.
